SARASOTA, FL (WFLA) -

A severely injured sea turtle is safe after being rescued by Coast Guard crew members off the coast of Longboat Pass in Sarasota County on Sunday.

The Coast Guard was notified by a good Samaritan that the turtle was found with a spear penetrating its shell. Crews say the turtle was unable to dive under the surface because of air leaking into the shell.

Crew members arrived on scene with the sea turtle, which was safely recovered without further injury.

The turtle was transferred to Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium in Sarasota Pass in stable condition.
