TARPON SPRINGS, FL (WFLA) -

One person was injured in a personal watercraft accident in the Gulf of Mexico near Fred Howard Park in Tarpon Springs Sunday.

The accident involved a jet ski and pontoon boat collision shortly after 4:30 p.m., the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office said. The crash occurred about a half mile south of Howard Park.

Alisha Pearson-Garvey, 31, of New Port Richey, who was operating the personal watercraft, was taken to Bayonet Point Hospital in Hudson for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

According to Pinellas County sheriff's deputies with the marine unit, the personal watercraft Pearson-Garvey was riding turned in front of the pontoon boat. The water crafts collided head on.

Pearson-Garvey was thrown off the jet ski, which became lodged under the pontoon.

The pontoon boat operator, Bernard Foigt, 36, of Trinity, and about a dozen other people on board the vessel were not injured.

Deputies say alcohol was not a factor in the crash.

An investigation is underway.
