ST. PETERSBURG, FL. (WFLA) - Last month officials with the Florida Department of Transportation posted signs on Gandy Beach listing what not to do while visiting the area.

On Saturday a 24-year-old St. Petersburg man was charged with cooking methamphetamine on the Pinellas County gathering spot.

Charles J. Tapp is facing one count of possession of methamphetamine and one count of unlawful possession of listed chemicals. He was booked into the Pinellas County Jail where he is being held on a bond of $12,000.

According to a Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office report deputies noticed a suspicious vehicle parked along the tree line of the beach just before 10:30 p.m. When they made contact with the sole occupant of the dark-colored Chevrolet Silverado – Tapp - they discovered several hypodermic needles.

The suspect was also observed placing items into a bag located near the back seat of the vehicle. A subsequent investigation indicated the truck was being used to ‘cook’ methamphetamine.

The deputies summoned detectives with the department’s Narcotics Division to test the chemicals. During an interview Tapp admitted to manufacturing the narcotic.

He was charged and arrested without incident. Additional charges may be filed as the investigation continues.
