Man, 20, drowns off Clearwater Beach

Posted: Updated:
CLEARWATER BEACH, FL (WFLA) - A man drowned in the gulf Friday evening as his boss fought for his own life in the waters nearby.

Late Friday, Clearwater Police identified the drowning victim as 20-year-old Ryan Terry from Gainesville, Georgia. A police officer was able to help save his friend, 41-year-old Donald Larry Duncan, also from Gainesville, Georgia.

“I got him to the beach at which point he said that he was overcome and they were drug out into the water by the tide and he was missing his friend,” said Clearwater Police officer Christian Zarra. “He was just totally exhausted. We had thought he was having a heart attack because he was so pale.”

Zarra believes the current swept the men out about 200 yards.

Francois St. Maurice, a 60-year-old cardiologist from Montreal, was on the beach at the time and helped treat Duncan.

It happened on the northern part of Clearwater Beach, near Idlewild St., which is hundreds of yards away from the closest lifeguard stand.

“If you have churned up seas, if you have really rough weather like we’ve had the last couple of days, go to a beach where there’s a lifeguard,” said Rob Shaw spokesman for Clearwater Police. “Go to a beach where there’s an extra set of eyes on you so if you get in trouble, there’s somebody there to help you.”
