Lakeland Police say wounded officer is respected member of department

Posted: Updated:
LAKELAND, FL (WFLA) -
Lakeland Police officer Doug Mills is now out of the hospital, but there were moments of grave concern after he was shot while trying to make an arrest Tuesday morning.

Assistant Lakeland Police Chief Mike Link says Mills is a respected member of the department who joined the force in December of 2008.

"I will tell you that he is a highly respected and regarded police officer here in our agency, does an outstanding job for us, very personable type individual, very professional in everything that he does,” said Link.

Mills is married with two children, his wife was brought to the hospital to see him.

Assistant Chief Link says a number of officers also responded to the hospital for support.

"As you can probably imagine, a lot of police officers. This is a family here in the Lakeland Police Department, so when one of us gets injured in any shape or fashion, or something of this critical nature, it's all hands on deck,” said Link.

Link says despite his wounds, Officer Mills was upbeat.

"He was in good spirits, as best he could be under the circumstances, definitely in a little bit of pain, obviously, but it seemed like he was in very good hands with the Doctors and the staff at the hospital,” said Link.

A spokesperson for the Lakeland Regional Medical Center says Officer Mills was discharged after 1:00 P.M.  Assistant Chief Link says, he is home recovering from his injuries.
