Airport Shoe Shiner Earns $5,000 Tip

Posted: Updated:
People have called him the unofficial ambassador of Mobile.

Nelson Easterling has become a famous face and shoe shiner and you've probably seen if you've been to Mobile Regional Airport.

Friday he was on the receiving end of goodwill.

Easterling says sometimes he will take on as many as 20 customers a day. Most are repeat customers. But it was one in particular that he apparently left a very good impression on.

Thomas Massie started sitting in Nelson's chair about a year ago. He’s a frequent flyer from Boston and was trying to close a business deal in Mobile.

Nelson told him that he would pray for Thomas to get that deal and it apparently worked.

Massie was so touched he wanted to leave Nelson a tip; a very big tip of $5,000.

“Nelson was, I think, very much a part of that process over that year period and at the end of the day the right thing to do is to show a little bit of God's favor and nelson is very deserving of us sharing that with him,” said Massie.

It means that I must continue to do what I do. And that means respect each and every customer like it is the last customer and maybe good things will come from that."

Massie runs Bridgeline Digital. They specialize in online content management. Because of their deal they'll be opening an office in the Port City. He says it could bring as many 50 jobs to Mobile.
