Clearwater cyclist killed in Oldsmar crash

OLDSMAR, FL (WFLA) - A 29-year-old Clearwater man died Friday night from injuries sustained in a vehicle vs. bicycle crash on Tampa Rd. in Oldsmar.

Vitalii Karpenko was pronounced dead at the scene just before 10 p.m.

According to a Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office report 53-year-old William Cowan of Tampa was exiting a driveway at 3689 Tampa Rd. in his 2011 Dodge Ram pick-up truck and was attempting to access to the westbound lane of the roadway. Karpenko was riding his bike east on the north sidewalk when Cowan accelerated and the truck struck him.

Karpenko was pinned underneath the vehicle.

Cowan was not hurt. Detectives say alcohol may have been a contributing factor in the incident. So far no charges have been filed as the investigation continues.

The roadway was closed for approximately two hours Friday night.
