NEW PORT RICHEY, FL (WFLA) - A morning traffic stop in New Port Richey turned into a dramatic struggle that stretched across four lanes of traffic and sent the suspect and two police officers to the hospital.

Lt. Steve Kostas says the suspect, Andrew Herman, was pulled over at the corner of Main Street and Rowan Road for a minor traffic violation. But when he pulled into a 7-11 gas station, the officer's drug-sniffing police dog alerted the officer to drugs. Then, the suspect took off.

Officers caught Herman, then there was a struggle, and then Herman ran away, only to be caught again. A Pasco County Sherrif's deputy passed by and helped stop traffic as officers struggled with Herman in the middle of the road.

During the struggle, Herman and one officer were hit by a taser.

The police dog ended up biting Herman several times in the leg. The K9 also bit his handler. Both men are at the hospital for treatment. A second officer is being treated for a broken thumb.

Kostas says Herman was found with heroin stuffed in his pants. It is his third narcotics arrest since December.
