Winter Haven toddler recovering after near drowning

Posted: Updated:

Winter Haven Police say a 2-year-old boy who nearly drowned on Wednesday afternoon is on the road to recovery.

Luis Stone II, who was pulled from the family pool yesterday, was alert and eating on his own Thursday morning, according to Winter Haven Police.

He remains at Tampa General Hospital for observation, but it appears his prognosis is to make a full recovery.

At about 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Winter Haven Police and Polk County Fire Rescue Paramedics responded to a 911 call at 709 Ave. L S.E. where the toddler had been pulled from the pool.

An older child saw the toddler face down in the pool and called for someone to help.

The toddler's father, Luis Stone, immediately ran outside and pulled the child from the pool. The boy's grandfather, Nicholas Aupperlee called 911 while the father started chest compressions on the child until paramedics arrived.

It is unknown how long the boy was in the water.

The toddler was airlifted to Tampa General Hospital.
