Hillsborough deputy shoots gator at park

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FL (WFLA) -

A Hillsborough County Sheriff's deputy shot an alligator during a death investigation Wednesday night at a public park.

Deputies were called to Edward Medard Park around 7:07 p.m. after a park ranger discovered the body of a man near the shoreline of a lake at the park.

The body was laying partially in the water near a tackle box and fishing pole. There were no visible signs of trauma to the body, according to the sheriff's office.

During their investigation, deputies noticed a lot of gator activity which increased as daylight faded.

While waiting for the Medical Examiner's Office to respond, a deputy saw a 6-to-8-foot-long alligator circling in front of the body.

The gator then began swimming directly toward the body.

Fearing that the body was possibly about to be tampered with, if not lost all together, a deputy shot one round and struck the alligator in the skull just behind the right eye.

After it was, the alligator immediately went back in to the water and was not seen again.

Florida Wildlife Conservation was notified of the incident.

The deceased man was identified as Larry Webb, 71, of Lithia.
