HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. -

Orange County Schools superintendent Gerri Martin resigned Monday after 7 months on the job.

In her resignation letter, Martin said she was leaving due to "a serious family medical situation that has to be priority for me."

She said her mother was diagnosed late last year with Stage 4 cancer. The school board unanimously voted to accept Martin's resignation Monday night, effective immediately.

"I think it's a surprise to the board that we were in this situation so quickly," Donna Coffey, chair of the board of education, told WNCN.

Martin's contract was set to continue until June 30, 2017. As part of her severance agreement, the board agreed to pay Martin a one-time amount of $100,000. That will come from the district's "unrestricted fund balance."

The board selected Martin in September and she started her role in October. Martin previously served as superintendent of McDowell County Schools.

Del Burns, former Wake County Schools superintendent, will serve as the interim superintendent.

"He's one of the best in the nation," Coffey said.

Burns served as interim superintendent of Orange County Schools last year after the previous superintendent retired.

"We're very pleased that he's able to join us again," Coffey said.
