HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FL (WFLA) -

They’re accused of stealing jewelry, guns, ammunition and even a former deputy's badges.

Hillsborough County Sheriff's detectives say Matthew Joseph Donovan, 18, and Steven Jovanny Alcantara, 21, went on quite the robbery spree in the Brandon area over the past few months.

In one case, Sheriff David Gee says, Donovan shot at one of the victims with the victim's own gun.

"These are guys who just go in and just kick in the front door and of course they're the most dangerous kind because they don't know if anybody's in there or not. More likely, than not, there could be somebody home,” said Sheriff Gee. "Every one of these crimes is a potential homicide. We're very lucky in this one case that the victim wasn't hit."

When Steven Frost learned his father's badges and gun were stolen, he never thought he'd see them again. Deputy Albert Frost worked at the Sheriff's Office in the 1940's and 50's, and has since passed away.

The younger Frost was elated when he learned detectives had made an arrest and recovered some of his father's belongings.

"It was a rush of emotions, you know," said Frost. "Relief, and basically some sadness, just up a high, I was like, yes, you know?"

Investigators say once Donovan learned they were on to him, he dumped many of the stolen items into a retention pond behind his Valrico apartment complex. The dive team was dispatched to recover some of the loot.

The sheriff says this may be just the tip of the iceberg. He believes there may be more items that haven't been recovered.

"Yeah, I think that's the question right now, and there, we don't even have it all,” said Gee. "There are more than a thousand pieces so there is still a lot of work to be done. The case is just beginning."

Deputies are holding Donovan in jail on a $547,250.00 bond. Alcantara is being held on a $141,750.00 bond.
