PASCO COUNTY, FL (WFLA) -

It might surprise you to learn that with the school year coming to an end child neglect cases are expected to decrease. But that's not necessarily a good thing.

The Pasco County Sheriff's Office is launching a new campaign encouraging people to report child neglect.

Investigators say in many cases teachers, bus drivers or other school officials report neglect and when kids aren't in school those cases aren't reported.

"We have, thousands of kids, I can imagine in Pasco County, that when they go to school, they are thrilled. Because they are being cared for, they are eating and they have somebody that is watching over them," said Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco.

On Monday, deputies arrested Robert Dowling, 31. They say he fell asleep and a 3-year-old child he was supposed to be taking care of was spotted wandering the streets in his Zephyrhills neighborhood.

Authorities say they had to go door to door to try and find where that child belonged.
