TAMPA, FL (WFLA) -

A jury recommended convicted cop killer Dontae Morris get the death penalty last year. Tuesday morning, he might buy himself a little more time.

Morris' attorney wants to push back sentencing already scheduled for May 30 because of a former Tampa Police Detective's involvement in the case.

Detective Eric Houston, one of several police officers to testify against Morris, was fired last month. Houston is the focus of a grand jury investigation. Chief Jane Castor won't give details yet, but 19 of Houston's cases are getting looked at, to make sure he acted appropriately.

Morris was convicted last year for shooting and killing Officers Dave Curtis and Jeff Kocab back in 2010. A jury recommended that Morris be sentenced to death. Judge William Fuente will either approve or deny the sentencing get pushed back. The hearing is Tuesday at 8:30 a.m.

News Channel 8 reached out to Sara Kocab, Jeff's widow, she wants to wait to comment until Judge Fuente makes his decision.
