HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FL (WFLA) -

Now finished at the charred home in Avila, investigators are conducting a financial audit on the man they say killed his wife and children before taking his own life.

Darrin Campbell shot his family, spread fireworks around their rented home and set the house on fire before shooting himself, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s office said last week.

Now investigators are digging into his past and present finances to see if there are any clues to help explain the murders.

“That means they’re exploring a motive,” said attorney Bryant Camareno.

While the sheriff’s office would not elaborate on what the financial audit will entail, Camareno said it will including tracking expenses and looking at whether he was spending more than he was bringing in.

“They’re going to subpoena his bank records,” Camareno said. “They’re going to subpoena every credit card debt he’s ever had.”

Such an audit could take several months, he said, and be particularly challenging if Campbell had any money overseas.

Campbell was chief operating officer at document imaging company VASPAR, but asked for a leave of absence a few days before the murders.

A company representative said VASPAR is not conducting an internal investigation and has no reason to believe there were improprieties in his work.

The Campbells were renting the home in the exclusive Avila community from tennis pro James Blake, but also owned vacant property in Odessa. That property was put on the market several months ago and is still listed for sale for $165,000.
