Carrboro family says alleged bully's mother 'doing the best she can'

CARRBORO, N.C. -

A Carrboro family sat down Monday with the mother of the boy they say has bullied their kids for months.

Last month, Renaldo Carvalho and Alyona Bogdanova said they would press charges against Frank Porter Graham Elementary School after their son and daughter were bullied there for the past six months.

Bogdanova said her son has endured pushing, punching and name calling, while she said the bully spits on her daughter's lunch room table.

The family said despite a promise from school Principal Emily Bivins that the school would arrange a meeting with the alleged bully’s parent, they said the school failed to do so.

On Monday, a school district administrator facilitated that meeting between the parents, and Carvalho said they were pleased with how the boy’s mother responded.

"She's doing the best she can," Carvalho said. "She's a hard working woman and she put her time towards her kid. But I guess, you know, she's expecting the school would help her, but there's no help on the other side."

The school has moved the alleged bully to another classroom, but Carvalho and Bogdanova said they are still critical of the way the school has handled the situation.

The family said Bivins previously told them it was two-sided and did not meet the definition of bullying. Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools spokesman Jeff Nash also said an external investigation determined that what was happening between the students was not bullying.

Nash said said the issue is more complex than it seems.

"We take student altercations very seriously in our school district," Nash said. "This situation is more complex than it would appear at first glance."

Privacy rules prevent the school system from saying what, if any, discipline the alleged bully has received.
