HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FL (WFLA) -

Two Hillsborough County students are in an elite group. They've been named United States Presidential Scholars, which is one of the nation's highest honors for college students.

Seniors Haoqing Wang and Kevin J. Mutchnick are the only U.S. Presidential Scholars named from the bay area, according to a Hillsborough County Schools spokesperson.

Haoqing Wang attends King High School and Kevin Mutchnick attends T.R. Robinson High School in Tampa.

The teens will be honored at a White House ceremony in June. U.S. Presidential Scholars receive an all-expense paid trip to meet with government officials, educators, authors, musicians, scientists, and other accomplished people.

To commemorate their achievement, the Scholars are also awarded the Presidential Scholars Medallion.

Each year, up to 141 students nationwide are named as U.S. President Scholars. The Scholars represent excellence in education and the promise of greatness in young people.

More than 3,000 candidates were initially identified from across the country, based on having scored exceptionally well on the SAT or the ACT. Each of the seniors selected has also shown great leadership skills and school/community involvement.

The United States Presidential Scholars program was established in 1964 by Executive Order of the President to recognize and honor our nation’s most distinguished graduating seniors.

The program was expanded in 1979 to also recognize students who demonstrate exceptional talent in the visual, creative, and performing arts.
