The nation's top military leader is in Durham tonight---getting ready to speak to students on the campus of Duke University Sunday.

General Martin Dempsey is often by the President's side as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He is also a Duke grad.

"I am 42 years graduated from West Point this year---30 years graduated from Duke---this is a bit of a homecoming," the general said in an interview at the Washington Duke Inn on campus.

Previewing his speech, he added, "The theme is---these young men and women have been given the greatest gift of all---and that is an education."

Of interest to people around North Carolina---Ft. Bragg.

"The Commander in Chief has a pretty good sense for what we ask our men and women to do and how often we ask them to do it, and in particular, the big military posts and bases," he said of the President's support.

The budget back and forths going on in Washington in relation to possible cuts there are on the minds of many military families.

The general admitted cuts are likely, but the long term health of the base and the military will be ok.

"I do think this will settle out, and I apologize for the uncertainty that they are suffering in the interim---but Ft. Bragg is one of the cornerstones of our military strategy."

He added, "The armed forces are actually accustomed to increases and decreases in resources."
