Polk toddlers involved in pool accident

POLK COUNTY, FL (WFLA) - Polk County Sheriff's deputies are investigating after rescue crews responded to a home for a drowning call involving two male toddlers Friday night.

Polk County Fire Rescue says two young boys, identified as 18-month-old Silas Walsh and 24-month-old Jayvian Watkins, were involved in a swimming pool accident at their grandparent's home located at 7108 Morning Dove Circle. They boys are cousins and Silas lived at the home with his grandparents.

They were found face down in the water of the pool by family members around 6:15 p.m.

The children were taken to Lakeland Regional Hospital, where they remained in "extremely critical condition" Saturday.

"This is a nightmare of monumental proportions," Sheriff Grady Judd said. They will be doing a complete investigation into the incident.

Judd says the initial review is the children wandered away from their parents and "obviously tumbled into the pool." He says it "appears to be a tragic drowning at this point."

The door was open and the gate into pool area was not latched.

"We see that the back door was closed but it doesn't latch. Once on the back porch, the gate was not intact," Judd explains. "So the children had free access to walk directly into the swimming pool."

Neighbors tell News Channel 8 the family has only been in the home for a couple months.
