Polk's hungry children served through backpack charity

Posted: Updated:
POLK COUNTY, FL (WFLA) -

Let's face it: most kids typically don't even want to look at their book bags on the weekends.

A Polk County charity is changing that by filling those bags each Friday with a helping of nourishment to get them to the next school day. It's called KidsPack.

On Thursday, 35 volunteers from Keller-Williams sorted through foods and stuffed them in bags for the 1200 students the charity serves.

Each child is selected through a school counselor who may notice the student is not getting food when they're not in school.

The charity works for the youngest students who aren't old enough to cook.

“We pack foods that kids eat and that they can self-administer,” said Randy Browning, founder of KidsPack. “It's all precooked, prepackaged, factory sealed, right off the shelf, like you would buy from your retailer.”

He said the book bags are a way to keep dignity in the program so kids don't get embarrassed about taking food home.

KidsPack serves hungry or underfed students in 60 elementary schools in Polk County.
