Gulf to Bay reopens in Clearwater

CLEARWATER, FL (WFLA) -

The traffic nightmare is over in Clearwater. Gulf to Bay Blvd. at US 19 reopened overnight.

Crews worked around the clock for one and a half days to remove four steel girders from the old US 19 bridge over Gulf to Bay Boulevard.

Late Wednesday night, temporary signal lights were put up and the road finally reopened around midnight. The old overpass was set to be removed next week, but demolition plans suddenly changed Tuesday afternoon when a massive steel beam started sagging from the bridge.

Traffic was diverted while the troubled beam, and three others, were removed.

The Florida Department of Transportation is now investigating what caused the problem and so is 8 On Your Side.
