Group of hunters drag stranded elk to safety from middle of frozen lake

Posted: Updated:
MONTANA - A group of men in Montana, most of them hunters, helped save a lucky elk.

One of the men shot video of the rescue after he found the elk had fallen through the ice on Hebgen Lake.

Armed with ropes, ladders, and a harness, he and some other locals were able to drag the elk from the icy water.  They used the ladders to distribute their weight across the ice, helping them avoid falling through themselves.

After pulling the elk out of the water the men worried it would run back across the ice.  They used the ladders again to help corral the animal back to shore and into the forest.
