Four arrested for stealing from charity donation boxes

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBUS, Ga. - A man and a woman were arrested Saturday morning, and two more men were arrested that same morning for stealing from Goodwill and Valley Rescue donation boxes, according to Columbus police.

In the first case, Antonio Carrow, 25, and Kelly Jackson, 33, were arrested after a traffic stop when they were driving a U-Haul van with thousands of dollars worth of items from donation boxes throughout the city. The two had been stealing items out of donation bins for several weeks, according to police. Carrow and Jackson were also charged with having 1.5 grams of suspected methamphetamine and a glass pipe commonly used for smoking meth.

In the second case, which police are calling unrelated, Darren Burch, 22, and Christopher Brown, 21, were caught stealing from a Valley Rescue donation box in the area of Milgen Road and Warm Spring Connector. Police say the passenger got out of the car and climbed into the donation box. Police pulled up and arrested the driver and found the passenger hiding in the donation box under some clothes. The driver told police they “were just trying to get some quick money to pay the bills,” according to a police report.

The staff at Valley Rescue thought something was wrong a few weeks ago when they noticed a decrease in their donations.

"It did impact the people that we work with here," said Donna Pearce, Valley Rescue Mission's Director of Development. "We didn't have quite as much as the community intended for us to have to help people."

Valley Rescue Mission staff are glad the donations are back in the right hands and offer forgiveness to the individuals accused of stealing.

"We want it to be a redemptive event in their lives," said Pearce. "We hope that this will be a time of learning, growing and changing."
