LAKELAND, FL (WFLA) -

The mystery behind recent cat killings in Lakeland appears to have been solved.

Two Lakeland cats that were found mutilated were actually killed by another animal, not a person.

Lakeland Police on Monday said that a University of Florida veterinary forensic pathologist examined the cats' remains and determined the cats were killed by a predatory animal. DNA samples were taken to identify the predatory animal. Those results should be back in 3 to 4 weeks.

Lakeland Police began investigating the cat deaths after residents reported finding cat remains in various locations.

PETA offered a $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in the case.
