Two injured in Morehead City boat explosion

MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. - Two men are recovering after a boat explosion Saturday morning.

The Morehead City Fire-EMS Department says they received a call Saturday morning at 9:46 a.m. from Carteret County 911 for a boat explosion with injuries at the Morehead City Yacht Basin.

Assistant Dockmaster, Andrew Newton, says he was on his way back to boat, when he saw the explosion.

" I was walking on the dock and all the sudden I heard a boom and saw a ball of fire come out the boat. The deck was separated from the boat, the seats were all off kilter and off balance.  There were places in the deck that had holes where holes shouldn't be at," said Newton.

The US Coast Guard and Army Reserve center heard the explosion and responded to assist, as well.

On the scene, Morehead City Fire-EMS units found a 28’ foot Carolina Classic fishing vessel tied to a dock with significant damage from the explosion. Two men who were on the boat were found on the dock, both with injuries from the explosion.

Head Dockmaster, Mike Pollard, helped get the men off the boat after the explosion.

"Both guys were conscious and all. One guy seemed a little [off], he may have been in shock a little bit," said Pollard.

Both men were taken to Carteret General Hospital. One was flown to another facility shortly after arriving at the hospital.

Witnesses say the boat was filled with fuel just before the explosion occurred. Witnesses used fire extinguishers to control the fire.

Pollard says he's never had something like this happen at Morehead City Yacht Basin.

The Army Reserve and Atlantic Beach Fire Department used booms to absorb any released fuel, which was minimal.

The NC Wildlife and Marine Fisheries is investigating the cause of the cause of the boat explosion.
