NCDOT defends snow storm payments, releases time sheets

Posted: Updated:
RALEIGH, N.C. - The North Carolina Department of Transportation provided time sheets for a company WNCN found had billed the state for nearly 56 days of work for one truck during January’s snowstorms. But after looking at the records, more questions remain.

WNCN discovered Statesville-based L&M Construction billed the state $147,943 for the use of a 10-cubic-yard spreader and plow for 1,348 hours of work.

The company also charged the state for 30 days worth of work for two brine trucks, totaling $79,020.

In response to WNCN’s investigation into how the state spent taxpayer money during this year’s snowstorms, the DOT launched its own probe.

It sent WNCN time sheets it says are for L&M Construction.

According to the documents, the company provided 103 vehicles in January. But the new records show nearly 60 additional hours billed – all without dollar figures.

In detailed records provided by the DOT earlier, WNCN found the state paid more than $1.8 million to third-party contractors for help with January’s winter weather preparation and cleanup. Some companies billed the state for hundreds of hours of work.
