Voicemail warns Pinellas candidate could be 'persona non grata'

PINELLAS COUNTY, FL (WFLA) -

The Congressional race in Pinellas County that got national attention a few months ago is heating up again - but this time behind the scenes.

A pastor who jumped in the race recently is re-evaluating his candidacy after he says he received some “internal opposition.”

Rev. Manuel Sykes also received a voicemail from the head of the Pinellas Democratic Party saying he wouldn't be getting some high-profile endorsements from Democrat and former candidate Alex Sink and St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman and telling him he should "hold off" or he would be "persona non grata, you can take that to the bank."

The party chair, Mark Hanisee, told News Channel 8, that Sykes, who is also the president of the Pinellas NAACP, didn’t have any political experience and that some people and suggested he start with a smaller office instead of the Congressional bid. Hanisee also said his call was trying to deal with some “false statements” that were out there.

Sykes’ campaign counsel Angela Owens, who provided the voicemail, told News Channel 8 they had never said Sykes had the endorsements of Sink or Kriseman. Upset by the comments on the recording, Owens said there is “no place for this in the Democratic Party.”
