Potential Schenecker juror admits to talking about case with others

Posted: Updated:
TAMPA, FL (WFLA) - The pool of potential jurors for the Julie Schenecker double-murder trial is getting smaller Wednesday as several jurors have been dismissed for allegedly talking about the case.

During day three of jury selection, juror 105 admitted to the court he openly discussed the case with other potential jurors after Judge Emmett Battles gave them a direct court order not to discuss the case with anyone.

"We just discussed a couple of things I heard on the news about the case. About what happened," Juror 105 told Battles. "That she had shot her two children. And it was pretty terrible," he continued when asked to be more specific.

He appears to have only discussed the case with a few others in the jury room, however the exact number of people remains under investigation and the court is investigating if that will be a problem seating an entire jury at this point.

Juror 105 has been dismissed. The court indicates that those jurors have admitted to communicating with juror 105 and have also been dismissed.

The court has narrowed down the jury pool to 100 people, divided into two groups of 50. At most, the court believes the incident would only affect the one group juror 105 was in.

The 53-year-old New Tampa woman is on trial for the alleged murders of her two children in January 2011. Schenecker reportedly told police she killed her 13-year-old son Beau and 16-year-old daughter Calyx because they were "mouthy." She's pleaded not guilty to two counts of first-degree murder by reason of insanity.

At one point during jury selection Wednesday, Schenecker wiped tears from her eyes as a potential juror said he went to school with her daughter and therefore could not be impartial in the trial.

Jury selection is expected to continue Thursday morning.
