Soldier home squatters face Pasco judge

PASCO COUNTY, FL (WFLA) -

Julio Ortiz and Fatima Cardoso faced a judge Tuesday.

The pair are now infamous for squatting in the New Port Richey home of a deployed soldier for more than a year and refusing to leave.

There are no charges for squatting, but they were arrested Monday for stealing at least $2,000 in electricity while at the home.

Pasco County Judge William Sestak declined to lower their bond for grand theft and kept that bond at $5,000. For Cardoso, it will be even more difficult to get out of jail. Her charge is a violation of her probation on drug charges last year. Because of that, there is no bond on that charge.

Sestak had little to say at the hearing. Both Ortiz and Cardoso said they have no jobs and no money to hire an attorney. Both of their cases were referred to the public defender's office.

Meanwhile, a veteran's group, Veteran Warriors, continues to work on cleaning and renovating the home. The hope is that the house will look brand new when the solider, Michael Sharkey returns from Hawaii with his family in June.
