A St. Petersburg man has been arrested for animal cruelty after deputies allegedly discovered his dog malnourished and living in deplorable conditions.

Pinellas County Deputies say the 17-year-old German Shepherd mix named "Rocky" only weighed 47 pounds. They say he was found covered in fleas and his dog bed was covered in urine and feces.

The dog's owner, 38-year-old Jason Aldridge, has been charged with one felony count of animal cruelty.

Deputies made the discovery Saturday morning, when they responded to Caroline Trailer Court on Haines Road for the report of a dog found. Aldridge told deputies he didn't realize Rocky had left his home.

As deputies investigated, they say Aldridge was feeding the dog from a plastic bag of food which was infested with bugs.

The dog's bed and area where dog spent the majority of his time was soiled with urine and feces and the food and water bowls were both empty.

According to deputies, Aldridge told them Rocky's health had been deteriorating, but he had not been to a vet recently due to his not having the money to take him.

Pinellas County Animal Services was contacted and took possession of the dog.
