Omar Santiago Mahieddine, 30, was transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital where he is listed in critical condition.

According to a Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office report the victim went to 8105 Tanglewood Lane just after noon on Saturday to retrieve some items. Mahieddine had moved out of the residence last week the report states.

He used his key to open the door and was met by Catalano who was holding a wooden baseball bat. The two engaged in a verbal dispute that quickly turned violent with the suspect striking Mahieddine in the head with the bat.

Deputies were dispatched to the scene where they found the victim suffering from life-threatening injuries. Catalano was interviewed by investigators and admitted to striking his former roommate.

The suspect is no stranger to law enforcement in Hillsborough County. He’s been arrested on nine previous occasions since 2001 on a variety of charges including battery, drug possession, driving under the influence, loitering and operating a motor vehicle without a valid driver’s license.

Additional charges may be filed as the investigation continues.
