Fatal crash on I-26

Posted: Updated:

Two crashes on I-26 Saturday morning left one person dead and sent another to the hospital.

The crash happened at 5:00 a.m. The car, a 2005 Pontiac Sunfire, was in the westbound lane on I-26 near the 11 mile, mile marker. It was a single car crash.

Johnson City Police Sergeant Reggie Sparks told News Channel 11 the preliminary investigation revealed that the driver lost control of the vehicle and struck a guard rail. The driver was taken to Johnson City Medical Center Hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

The passenger of the vehicle, 36 year old Sherri Lee Polk from Chilhowie, died at the scene.

"The traffic homicide team is still conducting their investigation. And as of right now there’s no charges but I should say pending charges," said Sergeant Sparks.

A second crash happened on I-26 while officers worked to clear the road from the first crash.

That crash involved two cars; one car rear ended the other. The driver of the car that was struck sustained minor injuries. EMS workers transported that driver to the hospital.
