Bartow man shot to death during struggle over gun

BARTOW, FL (WFLA) - Detectives with the Bartow Police Department are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred Friday night.

Binicio Cordova Gonzalez, 29, was transported to Lakeland Regional Medical Center just after 7:30 p.m. He died a short time later.

The incident occurred at 525 West Vine St.

According to a Bartow Police Department report the victim and his friend, 39-year-old Apolinar Perez, were hanging out with two other men when Perez and the other men began to argue.

The report states Perez retrieved a gun from his room in the residence in an attempt to scare off the pair. When Gonzalez saw Perez with the weapon he attempted to intervene.

During a struggle over the weapon the gun discharged striking Gonzalez. The two men involved in the argument with Perez fled the scene and have not been located.

Prosecutors with the State Attorney’s Office Homicide Division were contacted regarding the investigation. No charges have been filed as the investigation continues.
