BAY PINES, FL (WFLA) -

The late U.S. Representative C.W. Bill Young was honored during a ceremony Friday morning in which the Bay Pines Medical Center was renamed for him.

The ceremony comes after U.S. House of Representatives Bill 3302 was signed into law by President Barack Obama on November 13, 2013.

The law officially changed the name of the facility from the Bay Pines VA Medical Center to the C.W. Bill Young VA Medical Center in honor of the Congressman’s work on behalf of Veterans and their families during his 22 terms as a member of Congress.

Veterans, friends and government officials were in attendance for Friday's ceremony. Speakers including Vice Admiral Matthew L. Nathan, Surgeon General of the Navy and Chief of the Navy's Bureau of Medicine and Surgery, spoke about Young's dedication to veterans and his success in getting attention paid to their needs.

U.S. Rep. David Jolly, elected to fill Young's seat in Congress, had been scheduled to speak but did not attend. A VA official said he was at a memorial for a veteran and unable to attend.

Earlier this week, Young's widow told News Channel 8 that she would no longer support Jolly. She was unhappy more of Young's staff was not hired to keep working in District 13. When asked at the event whether she was glad he wasn't there, Beverly Young said she had no comment.

Jolly's office put out a release Friday applauding the renaming of the center in honor of the late Congressman Young.

Congressman Young passed away on October 18, 2013 at the age of 82 and was laid to rest at the Bay Pines National Cemetery on October 24.
