FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -
Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office said a 3-year-old boy shot while sleeping Friday morning died as a result of his injuries.
The sheriff's office said Ahmed Daniels was pronounced dead Saturday at Cape Fear Valley Medial Center around 11:40 a.m. Daniels' body will be sent to the State Medical Examiner's Office on Monday for an autopsy.
The shooting happened around 3:30 a.m. Friday at 5770 Peele Street in Fayetteville. Detectives said the child was hit after someone fired shots into the home where the child was sleeping.
The sheriff's office is now investigating the incident as a murder.
“Every resource will be used to bring the responsible person or persons to justice for the death of this child,” Sheriff Moose Butler said.
The shooting occurred at the same mobile home park that deputies raided last week and confiscated drugs and weapons, according to Butler
"This situation just further demonstrates how horrible this crime is and how deplorable these living conditions are," said Butler. "Even though people in this area knew that law enforcement was watching and ready to act, they showed how little respect they have for human life, not just in their living conditions, but in firing a weapon through the wall of this trailer, that left a sleeping 3-year-old child critically injured."
