CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -

Some UNC students think the University could take a stand to help workers in Bangladesh.

Students met with Chancellor Carol Folt Thursday for a second time on the issue.

The push comes one year to the day when more than 1,000 garment workers were killed in a factory collapse in Bangladesh.

Olivia Abrecht spoke with a survivor of the collapse who visited the Chapel Hill campus recently.

“She told her story to me and she told me that unless UNC is willing to hold corporations accountable, unless we as an institution make it a priority to insure that our money does not go to companies that are willing to allow workers in their factories to die, then workers will continue to die,” Abrecht said.

Tom Ross, president of the UNC system, issued a memo to all schools requiring licensees to join and maintain membership in either the “Accord on Fire and Building Safety in Bangladesh” or the “Alliance for Bangladesh Worker Safety.”

The student activists said the “Accord” offers better protection for workers.

The UNC General Administration will evaluate the effectiveness of both options and recommend a system-wide approach to the president by January.

All UNC licensees who source apparel in Bangladesh are currently covered by the “Accord.”
