BARTOW, FL (WFLA) - Polk County high school teacher Jennifer Fichter says she fell in love and had sex with her 17-year-old student.

Tuesday afternoon, the Polk County School Board voted to fire her.

Fichter told investigators her relationship with the boy started in November and that they had sex 20 to 30 times. Fichter, an English teacher at Central Florida Aerospace Academy, claims the boy got her pregnant and she had an abortion.

She told police they had sex in multiple places, but mostly in the back seat of her truck in the Preserve Apartments in Lakeland.

Polk County Superintendent Kathryn LeRoy says there was no warning.

"It's just a really sad, unfortunate situation that's happened here," LeRoy said.

LeRoy says the district runs background checks on every teacher that applies for a job. In LeRoy's case, they checked criminal records, personnel files and finger prints, but saw no red flags.

"She was actually deemed competent or very competent by the school where she worked," LeRoy said.

Since Fichter's arrest last week, though, allegations have surfaced that the teacher may have had inappropriate contact with a student in a previous school district in Orlando. She is reported to have told a student that he "made her melt" and that she had dreams about him. Reports of those problems never made their way to the Florida Department of Education.

LeRoy said she wants parents to know the district is working to keep their kids safe. She admits more needs to be to help districts catch potential problems.

"We need to work together as a team across all school districts to make sure we don't let anything all through the cracks and that we're reporting everything that needs to be reported."

LeRoy recommended the board terminate Fichter immediately, and no one on the board disagreed.
