RTP, N.C. -

Bayer Crop Science opened its new North American Bee Care Center in RTP Tuesday aimed at studying and improving the health of honey bees.

Honey bees are vital to putting food on the table as they pollinate more than a quarter of plants consumed in the United States, Bayer said.

"Without those honey bees, you don't have mustard for your hamburgers. You wouldn't have apples for your apple pies. And, your grocery store shelves would be nearly empty and the cost of that food production would rise dramatically. And so, honey bees are affecting everyone, everywhere whether they know it or not," said Becky Langer, project manager of the North American Bee Care Program.

Jim Blome, president and CEO of Bayer CropScience LP, said many issues affect the health of the honey bees and the bee care center plans to help the bee “meet the increasing global demand for crop pollination.”

The ability of the honey bee to thrive is affected by disease, parasites, genetics and more, Blome said.

The honey bee is not native to North America. The insect was brought here by European colonists, according to Bayer.

The $2.4 million center has a section that is open to the public by appointment a couple times a week.
