Hillsborough Ave. getting new traffic signal, crosswalk

The Florida Department of Transportation plans a new traffic light and crosswalk on a busy section of Hillsborough Avenue, where dozens of pedestrians have been hit since 2008.

Three of those pedestrians were killed.

Last month, two sisters were hit and one died after they were hit crossing Hillsborough Avenue after school let out at Middleton High School.

FDOT says it's working with the city of Tampa to install the crosswalk and traffic light. But it will take 16 months to install the new safety measures. That's because it will take time to move utilities and work out right of way issues with the city.

Despite all of the accidents, people still take chances on this roadway.

Marcus Brown said he knows better but is still tempted to take the fastest route across the street.

"I do cross the street because it's so much faster, it's embarrassing to admit," he said. "But I think we need a crosswalk, especially for the kids."

He says people should walk the few hundred feet to the existing crosswalk, but they won't.

"I feel like I can make it, and God is on my side. I try to be as careful as I can. But you have to worry about other drivers," he said.

In the meantime, Tampa Police say they plan to step up patrols and may even start ticketing people.

Brown says he doesn't want a ticket, but if it will save lives, he thinks police should give tickets.
