CITRUS COUNTY, FL (WFLA) -

The search ended Friday with no luck finding missing pilot 74-year-old Theodore Weiss and his plane. The search will pick back up Saturday, when dozens of law enforcement officers and volunteers will begin searching in Hernando County.

Weiss took off in his experimental aircraft last Saturday. He was headed from the Dunellon Airport in Marion County to the Zephyrhills Regional Airport, but never made it. He was reported missing to the Marion County Sheriff's Office on Monday afternoon.

90 searchers have been combing the woods in Citrus County for Weiss. As they finish searching wooded areas in Citrus County, they'll move south into Hernando County.

The plane is described as a white experimental type, single-engine, two-seat, low wing aircraft with a green stripe and N229P on the tail section.

Searchers included law enforcement officers and civilian volunteers from the following agencies:

  • Hernando County Sheriff's Office
  • Citrus County Sheriff's Office
  • Sumter Sheriff's Office
  • Florida Wildlife Commission
  • Southwest Florida Water Management District
  • Sarasota K-9 Search and Rescue

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is changing management rules of invasive lionfish to remove them from state waters. Lionfish was introduced to state waters in the 1980s, and since then, populations have boomed in recent years, negatively impacting native wildlife and habitat, the FWC says.
