PASCO COUNTY, FL (WFLA) -

The Florida Department of Transportation has asked contractor O.H.L. to look at other option beyond the proposed elevated toll highway in Pasco County.

The proposed roadway would run above the State Road 54/56 corridor from the Suncoast Parkway to Interstate 75.

“We won’t move forward without any public support,” said Florida Department of Transportation District 7 administrator Frank Chupka.

“This is how we do at DOT, we present options we usually don’t come with one option,” said Chupka.

But people at the Pasco Alliance of Community Associations meeting Thursday night didn’t get to hear those options. And they didn’t hold back about their concerns with the elevated toll highway.

“So there is still time to resist this because I smell a rat coming here,” said John Pavka at the meeting.

“Nobody is going to maintain it,” said Debbie Cetanzro.

“On a privately owned road, you’re going to have much higher tolls that the people of Pasco County are not going to be willing to pay,” said Jason Amerson with Pasco Fiasco, a group formed to in opposition to the proposed highway.

“Which would depress property values and cause people to loss their investments,” said Amerson.

The PACA group was able to fire off questions to county representative Richard Gehring and Chupka.

FDOT wants to make a decision by the end of the year on the project but Chupka said a decision will likely come before then.

Pasco County is conducting a survey that can be found at pascocountyfl.net.
