The City of Lakeland’s Office of Professional Standards at the Lakeland Police Department has found accusations that Acting Chief of Police Larry Giddens made threatening statements to Retired Police Officer Jimmy Mock to be unfounded.

“We’re trying to put all this behind us and we’re moving forward,” Lakeland’s spokesman Kevin Cook said.

The Lakeland Police Department released the following statement on behalf of Giddens:

“The Lakeland Police Department takes allegations against its members seriously. When complaints are received, a thorough investigation is completed.

I am satisfied with the results of the investigation and believe a comprehensive review of the allegations was completed. This chapter is now over and we can continue to move forward.”

The allegations stem from a meeting Giddens and Mock had on April 25, 2013 at Mitchell’s Coffee House in Lakeland.

Mock claims that Giddens told him he would lose his retiree in “good standing” status if he did not stop posting Lakeland Ledger articles about the department on his Facebook page.

The 15-page investigative report said that evidence shows Giddens was only meeting with Mock to conduct a “status check” on his mental state and discuss his concerns regarding the LPD.

City spokesman Kevin Cook said it’s good to have the investigation over and he believes the police department can focus on moving forward.

“I know in this world you’re innocent until proven guilty but you’ve also got this thing hanging over your head of you’re guilty of this until you’re proven innocent,” Cook said.

Jimmy Mock was not available for comment Thursday but he said by Facebook that he was not done pursuing the matter and that “they have awoken the bear.”
