Hope, the dog that was doused with kerosene and lit on fire, will likely remain in intensive care for one more week.

The 1-year-old mixed breed from Arcadia was burned on about 60 percent of her body on March 20. Investigators believe that her owner may have set her on fire.

Hope was brought to Tampa's BluePearl Veterinary, a veterinary trauma center, for treatment of her extensive injuries.

On Wednesday, a BluePearl spokesperson said that the clinic's ophthalmologist examined Hope and is concerned about her left eye. Because of burns to her eyes, some tissue has sloughed off the center part of her left cornea, which has caused the tissue underneath it to become more fragile.

“As the eye continues with the healing process, her eye is attempting to grow blood vessels to try to heal the center of her cornea where the most damage was done," said Dr. Tammy Miller Michau.

“In the meantime, we continue to watch her very closely in case we need to step in surgically to stabilize her eye to prevent it from rupturing.”

Hope is expected to recover and will have vision in both eyes, but her healing process will take longer than expected. Doctors previously thought Hope would be able to move from intensive care at BluePearl to the care of her own veterinarian.

Hope will require daily treatment for her eyes and doctors will also be monitoring her left eye to see if surgery will eventually be required. Hope also receives special eye drops every hour.

The staff at BluePearl has grown very fond of Hope. She gets to hang out in the ICU with the staff. Hope also spends much of the day resting. She does get to go outside for fresh air.

Almost every afternoon, Hope is visited by a member of the Hardee County Animal Rescue Team, which is raising money for her care. As of Wednesday, April 9, $47,894 has been donated.
