Of all the states in the U.S., Florida has the largest number of doctors that had at least $3 million in 2012 Medicare claims, according to data released by the federal government on Wednesday.
The data shows medical procedures performed around the country and how much individual physicians charged and were paid by Medicare for those procedures.
An Associated Press analysis of the data reports a small percentage of the physicians getting Medicare reimbursements make up a large amount of the dollars spent. According to the AP analysis, 344 physicians received at least $3 million each. Together, they were paid almost $1.5 billion.
About 1 in 4 of the top-paid doctors - 87 of them - practice in Florida, a state known both for high Medicare spending and widespread fraud. Rounding out the top five states were California with 38 doctors in the top group, New Jersey with 27, Texas with 23, and New York with 18.
The data is from 2012 and represents $77 billion in Medicare payments. It is viewable in Excel spreadsheet form and allows patients to look at information pertaining to their specific doctors or health providers for procedures including X-rays, flu shots and new patient visits.
