Sleepwalking 10-year-old grabs keys and smashes into parked cars, police say

Toledo, OH -

A sleepwalking child is believed to be the person responsible for several damaged cars.

Toledo police say the 10-year-old girl was asleep when she left the house in her parents car.

The 10-year-old's stepfather says she got a hold of the car keys, got in the car and drove two and a half blocks, smashing into several parked cars.

When police found her she was crying and scared but not injured.

Her step dad says she has a developmental disability and is known to sleepwalk but says she's never done something like this.

Police did cite the girl for failure to control, not wearing a seat belt, and operating a vehicle without a license. She will have to appear in juvenile court within the next couple of weeks but police say it's possible the case could be thrown out.

Police say that's standard procedure so victims don't have trouble getting their insurance companies to pay for the repairs.
