Suspect in Pasco spinal center shooting dies

Posted: Updated:
PASCO COUNTY, FL (WFLA) -

The suspect involved in a shooting at the West Coast Spine and Injury Center in Pasco County, has died.

Investigators say doctors released 34-year-old Jaime Velez from the hospital on Friday. They say he met with his attorney and turned himself into the Pasco County Jail that morning. He bonded out of jail Friday afternoon and reported to a rehabilitation facility in Hillsborough County.

Velez died a short time later.

Investigators say on Feb. 17 Velez walked into the spine and injury center located at 1817 U.S. Highway 19 in Holiday intending to confront the victim, Leonard Linardos.

According to the arrest report, Velez pointed a handgun at Linardos and told him "These are your last moments." Detectives say Linardos, fearing for his safety, armed himself with a handgun and fired several times striking Velez.

Authorities believe Velez died as a result of injuries from those gunshots, but the medical examiner's office is conducting an autopsy.
