WINTER HAVEN, FL (WFLA) - An 84-year-old woman almost hit a customer when she crashed her car through the front door of a Winter Haven CVS on Wednesday afternoon.

Miraculously, the customer had stepped back and out of the path of the car just moments before it crashed into the store.

The crash, which happened at 4:43 p.m., caused an estimated $65,000 damage to the CVS store at 970 SR 540.

Investigators say Margaret Underwood drove her husband to the CVS in their 2008 Chevy Impala. Underwood stayed in the car while her husband went inside. When he came back out of the store, Underwood began backing out of the parking space when she struck a Chevrolet Suburban that was driving in the parking lot.

Underwood's husband immediately went over to check on the Suburban while Underwood put the Impala in drive and returned to the parking spot.

For unknown reasons, Underwood then accelerated forward and crashed through the front doors of the store, landing 25 feet inside.

Adrienne Watkins, 80, of Winter Haven, was inside the store, pushing a shopping cart near a front counter.

Investigators say Watkins was looking at products in the store and stopped and backed up a few feet to reach for an item.

As she leaned down to pick up the item, Underwood's Impala came crashing through the door. It destroyed the counter and narrowly missed Watkins. Watkins was taken to Winter Haven Hospital where she was treated for cuts and bruises.

Investigators say CVS associate Stormy Fulcomer, 20, of Polk City, was in another part of the store stocking shelves and heard a loud bang.

Fulcomer walked to the front of the store and saw the Impala and Watkins lying on the floor. Fulcomer rushed to help Watkins and heard the sound of the Impala's engine.

Fulcomer told investigators the engine was revving at a high speed and the car's tires were spinning. Fulcomer put Watkins in a safe location, then helped Underwood out of the car and turned the Impala off.

Investigators say that if Watkins had not backed up when she did, she would have been hit by the car and severely injured.

Winter Haven Police gave Underwood a ticket for improper backing and careless driving.
