40th annual Sun 'n Fun kicks off

Posted: Updated:
LAKELAND, FL (WFLA) - Sun 'n Fun kicks off Tuesday in Lakeland and this year gives even more reasons to celebrate.

Organizers say 2014 marks not only the 40th year of the event but the 100th anniversary of commercial aviation. Aviation enthusiasts are pulling out all the stops to make this year bigger and better.

The international fly-in expo has been named one of the best in the country. The event was started in 1974 by a group of local aviators.

The expo, titled "A Fair in the Air to Remember," goes from April 1-6.

This year, the U.S. Navy Blue Angels are back and will perform Friday, Saturday and Sunday.  Also this year, people will have the chance to take a flight in a genuine Ford Tri-Motor to celebrate the Golden Age of Aviation.

"All of the exotic warbirds are returning. There's a JN-4 Jenny and a Glacier Girl,” Sun 'n Fun Communications Director Sandy Bridges said. “And there's a B-17 people can fly. The warbird ramp is going to fully stocked."

As if there's not enough incentive to go already, Bridges says if Florida residents purchase a ticket for Saturday, then they get in Sunday at no charge.

Or if you are looking for a career in the field, a job fair recruiting pilots, flight operations, engineers, and mechanics will be held at the event on Wednesday, April 2 at the Florida Air Museum.

Lastly, if engines on the ground are more your speed, there will be a Sun 'n Fun Car Show held Saturday and Sunday featuring vintage cars and motorcycles. Get a full list of daily events below.

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is changing management rules of invasive lionfish to remove them from state waters. Lionfish was introduced to state waters in the 1980s, and since then, populations have boomed in recent years, negatively impacting native wildlife and habitat, the FWC says.
