HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FL (WFLA) -

On Tuesday the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office will turn over six horses that were seized during an animal cruelty investigation to representatives of the Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches to be transported to the Florida Sheriffs Boys Ranch at Live Oak.

The horses will be cared for by youth and become part of their equestrian program.

The Sheriff's Office took custody of five horses during an investigation into animal cruelty in Wimauma on January 17th and 30th.

The horses, owned by the same individual, suffered from malnourishment and mistreatment and were grossly underweight. The owner ended up voluntarily turning over custody of the animals.

Criminal charges are pending in the case.

The Sheriff's Office Agriculture Unit worked with veterinarians to nurse the animals back to health and on March 22nd one of the mares gave birth to a healthy colt who the deputies named, JJ.

The cornerstone and pride of the Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches is it's nationally renowned network of residential child-care campuses, an array of cottages and villas scattered throughout the state of Florida offering a stable home to needy children. By utilizing the Boys Ranch/Live Oak, Youth Villa/Bartow, Youth Ranch/Safety Harbor and Youth Ranch-Bradenton/Sarasota, the Youth Ranches trained and devoted staff are well-equipped to nurture needy, neglected boys and girls, and provide a warm sense of security, guidance and tenderness. Youth are cared for by "cottage parents," who help develop a strong work ethic, sense of responsibility, teamwork and respect in each boy and girl.
