LAKE WALES, FL (WFLA) -
A 21-year-old Loxahatchee man faces a series of charges connected with a crime spree early Saturday morning, Lake Wales police officials said.
Caleb Michael Sementelli is accused of robbing at least two people at gunpoint and taking a cell phone, bicycle and an EBT card used for food and other public assistance. Police said other personal items found in Sementelli's possession belonged to a third unnamed victim.
According to Lake Wales police news release, the crime spree began about 2:20 a.m. when Sementelli asked James Derek Saltzberry of Babson Park for a ride on his motorcycle. Saltzberry offered to help and allowed Sementelli to ride shotgun to a Winn-Dixie store on State Road 60.
Sementelli refused to get off the bike when they arrived, the release stated. Sementelli brandished a small handgun and demanded Saltzberry's cell phone. He told Saltzberry to drive him to an ATM, so he could withdraw cash from Saltzberry's account. Instead Saltzberry drove to a nearby Walmart, where he asked store employees for help.
Sementelli jumped off the bike and ran into an orange grove.
At about 5 a.m., Sementelli jumped into a car driven by Shawana Yvett Scott, who made a stop at the Sunoco convenience store at 1349 E. State Road 60, the release stated. Sementelli took her EBT card then tried to use it at an ATM inside the Sunoco store.
Scott drove away and later returned to check on the convenience store clerk. Police officers were in the area searching for a suspect matching Sementelli's description when Scott told the officers what had happened to her.
Officers spotted Sementelli on the bicycle they believe he had taken during the spree. They believe he robbed a third person at a nearby McDonald's.
Lake Wales police officers arrested Sementelli after a short pursuit, authorities said.
